Several local organizations in Fannin County have been busy collaborating on ways to recognize that April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.

Several local organizations in Fannin County have been busy collaborating on ways to recognize that April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.

Local organizers have chosen to stick with the theme "No Excuse for Child Abuse” again this year.  Last year at least sixteen schools, businesses and churches across the county posted this slogan on their outdoor marquee signs.  "We hope to have even more signs up this year,” said Sandy Barber with the Fannin County Children's Center.
‽Go Blue Day” will be celebrated on April 7 across the state by the Texas Department of Protective and Family Services and the Child Welfare Boards.  On this day everyone is encouraged to wear blue.

Children's illustrator Mary Haverfield will be in Bonham on Saturday, April 10 at the Creative Arts Center.   Haverfield will talk about her illustrations in the book ‽Sometimes It'ss Grandma's and Grandpa's - Not Mommies and Daddies” and autograph copies of this book from 1-2 pm.  Afterwards, there will be an opening reception and awards presentations for the ‽Open Your Heart Children's Art” show from 2-4 pm.  The Creative Arts Center is located at 200 W. Fifth Street in Bonham.

The Children's Center and CPS board are also planning the second annual ‽Stand Up for Kids” event for Wednesday, April 14.  Community members are encouraged to wear blue and stand around the courthouse in Bonham from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.  They will hand out prevention tips and raise awareness about the problem of child abuse in Fannin County.  Special blue t-shirts which proclaim ‽No Excuse for Child Abuse” on the front are on sale at the Children's Center.  Order forms and payment are due by April 1.  For more details, go to www.fanninccc.org or call (903) 583-4339.

On April 22, the Children's Center will host their annual open house from 5:30 to 7 pm.  The community is invited to tour the center, enjoy light refreshments and more at 112 W. Fifth Street in Bonham.

April 25 is Blue Sunday.  Churches and other places of worship are encouraged to say a special prayer for abused and neglected children and the people who work to rescue them.  For more information, visit www.bluesunday.org.
