Graham police arrested a man on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child under six years of age last week.
On Feb. 16, Larry Wayne Burleson, 67, of Graham was arrested after admitting to the alleged offense during the course of an investigation.
According to a press release from the Graham Police Department, the investigation began July 22 when police were contacted by Child Protective Services in reference to a reported sexual assault of a child.
A forensic interview conducted by staff at Virginia's House revealed that the victim was in Burleson's care when the incident took place. The press release states that the victim, the mother and another child, the victim's sibling, were living with Burleson at the time.
During a police interview by investigator Sgt. Jeff Smith, Burleson admitted to the assault.
He was arrested and is being held at the Young County Jail on $200,000 bond.
"By the nature of it, it wasn't just a clear cut case at first so they had to do a lot of investigating on it,” said Assistant Police Chief Bullock, explaining the length of time between the initial report and Burleson's arrest.
Police Chief Tony Widner said the arrest would not have been possible without the help of Virginia's House.
"The staff and team at Virginia's House play a very important role in all investigations that involve children in Graham and Young County,” he said.
